Obituary

Robert R. Stockton, 90, of Summit, passed away Sunday, November 6, 2016, at his son's residence in McComb. He was born June 3, 1926, in Lincoln County. He was the son of Zachary R. and Lela Bales Alexander Stockton. He and his brother-in-law, Glen Johnston were former owners of Summit Barber Shop for 12 years before going to work for the U.S. Postal Service where he went on to retire as postmaster in Summit, MS. He was a longtime member of Johnston Chapel United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer for thirty years and chairperson of the cemetery committee until his death. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He was an avid sports fan and followed many teams. He loved gardening in his back yard and giving most of it away. He was a generous man to his family and friends and to an occasional stranger. His family and church were at the center of his life. One thing most people didn't know was that he was an awesome poet. He was truly a great, honorable man! He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 67 years, Erma Johnston Stockton; a sister, Mildred Stockton Johnson and numerous half- brothers and half-sisters. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Dwight and Jennie Lou Stockton of McComb; two grandsons, Benji Stockton and Brett Stockton; two great-granddaughters, MacKenzie Stockton and MacKayla Stockton and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation is Thursday, November 10, 2016, at Johnston Chapel United Methodist Church from 5:30PM until 8PM and Friday from 10AM until services at 11AM with Pastor Dave Steveline and Bro. Glenn Martin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Sharkey Funeral Home in Summit in charge. Pallbearers will be Benji Stockton, Brett Stockton, Tim McDaniel, Keith McDaniel, Troy McCullough and Billy Clawson. Honorary pallbearers will be Ronnie Bales, Billy Moak, Mike Richard, Thomas Johnston, Clayton Robert and Robert Walker. The Family would like to thank the staff of Hospice Compassus for their loving care. Memorials may be sent to Johnston Chapel U.M.C. Prayer Garden, P.O. Box 1206, Summit, MS 39666.
