Robert "Pee Wee" Godwin, 73, went peacefully into the great beyond while at home Monday, December 23rd, 2019.
Robert, originally of Foxworth, Mississippi, served his country bravely in Vietnam where he was shot five times and received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. After leaving the Army, Robert moved to McComb, making it his home and spent the next 25 years as a locomotive engineer before retiring from the Illinois Central Railroad. Robert loved to cook and was known for his excellent gumbo, natural storytelling with great comedic timing and an incredibly giving spirit. He loved his daughter, Andrea, his special friend of 27 years, Patricia, and her family whom he adopted as his own. He loved animals, especially his dog, a lovable rescue, Sam. After retiring, he could often be found drinking coffee with friends.
Robert was preceded in death by: his parents, Luther and Vivian, and two brothers, Lavon and Jimmy. He is survived by: a daughter, Andrea Godwin McCoy; her husband, Calvin McCoy; a brother, Charles Godwin; nieces, Vivian Marie, Evie Walley and Anna Godwin; his special friend of 27 years, Patricia Simmons Skipper; her daughters Melissa Fortenbery, Melanie Smith and Amy Schwartz; as well as a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Pallbearers are Hunter Crawford, Keaton Fortenbery, Drew Llewellyn, Ty Fajoni, Hagen Brister and Cole Currie. Honorary pallbearers are Arnie Smith, Jeff Lyles, Jason Schwartz, Bill Moak, Pat Kelly and Larry Tullos.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 28th, from 9:30 – 10:30 am and funeral to follow at 11 at Sharkey Funeral Home in Summit, followed by a military graveside service in Foxworth, MS. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked mourners donate to the Wounded Warrior Project in his memory
