Obituary

Robert Mearl "Frog" Hughes, 78, entered Heaven's gates on September 3, 2024, surrounded by family and friends.

Robert was born in Magnolia on January 13, 1946, to Mearl Jessie Hughes Sr. and Clotiel Simmons Hughes, who preceded him in death. Also preceding him were two brothers, R. L. Hughes and Mearl Jessie Hughes, Jr.

Robert was proud to have been accepted into the MS Army National Guard. He enjoyed playing football for the Magnolia High School Bearcats. He worked offshore for Noble Drilling for more than 30 years. In his free time, and after retirement, Robert enjoyed working on his numerous antique vehicles. He was passionate about doing his own yardwork. Robert and Darlene have been members of New Heights Baptist Church for many years, blessed by many friends and prayer warriors.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Darlene Wingate Hughes; daughter, Brandi (Paul) Owens; son, Jody (Debra) Hughes and daughter, Robbey (Randy) Greer. Also surviving are grandchildren, Bailey Hughes, Davin Hughes, Griffin Owens, Cade Wilson and Reagan Wilson; siblings, Charles Hughes, Brenda (Jim) Coleman, Martha Hughes and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Thursday, September 5, 2024, from 5:00 P M until 8:00 P M at Sharkey Funeral Home in Summit, MS. Visitation will resume Friday, September 6, 2024, from 1:00 P M until services at 3:00 P M at Sharkey Funeral Home. Officiants will be Bro. Joseph Ingram, Dr. Randy Burdeaux, Bro. Rick Kennedy and Victor Lowery. Burial will follow at Bluff Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Magnolia, MS, with Victor Lowery officiating.

Pallbearers will be Bailey Hughes, Davin Hughes, Griffin Owens, Cade Wilson, Reagan Wilson and Lee Fortenberry. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Adult IV Sunday School Class and Danny Puffer.

The family expresses heart-felt thanks to Deaconess Home Health and Hospice, especially to Kay Fuller along with Melissa Williams and Jessica Warren, friends and caregivers.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude, New Heights Baptist church, or a charity of your choice.
