Frances Loraine Alford Herrington, "Nancy", was born November 13, 1922 in Walthall County, Mississippi to Benjamin Cleveland and Annie Freeman Alford. She was the 7th born of 13 children. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 36 years, Roy Herrington; 11 siblings, sisters-Lavelle, Ouida, Helen, Hattie Mae, Emma, and Elaine; brothers-Hubert, Herbert, Bill, Freeman, and Hugh; and two nieces: Nancy Alford who was her namesake, and Juanita Lynn Herrington Bailey. She is survived by her only living sibling, Catherine Alford Ellard and husband Carl Bruce Ellard of Natchez; five nieces: Gaye Frances Alford Smith, Dinah Lynn Alford McPherson, Sharon Alford Whitt, Annie Ruth Huhn Campbell, and Debbie Ellard Ball and their families; seven nephews: James Herrington, David Herrington, Julius Huhn, Louie Huhn, LeRoy Owens, Philip Alford, and Mike Ellard and their families, with a host of great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews She excelled in school and all sports that she participated in. She loved to compete with her brothers in any activity they did. She could not only shoot a gun, but she could play a guitar. Nancy's mother died when she was 16, leaving just she and her sister Catherine to care for and cook for her father and brothers until she left home. She finished high school at age 18 and left home to attend nursing school at the McComb Infirmary. She finished after 3 years with a diploma RN degree in nursing. Nancy married Roy Herrington July 31, 1944 and they settled in McComb. She was a life-long member of Central Baptist Church, and loved and supported each pastor that served the church. Members of the congregation have continued to visit her while in Camelia Estates for the past nine years. Special love and thanks to Randall and Karen Allen for the many prayers and visits to her over the years. Nancy attended anesthesia school in New Orleans, obtaining a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist license in 1957, and she and her husband Roy founded Super Furniture Mart, which they operated in McComb for many years until Roy's retirement. She worked at Southwest Regional Medical Center from the time it opened in 1967 until 1975, at which time she took a teaching position at University Medical Center, and she and Roy moved to Jackson, where they resided until 1979. She then took a position at Womans' Hospital in Baton Rouge. Roy passed away in January, 1980. Nancy continued to work in Baton Rouge and travelled back and forth between her home in Baton Rouge and her home in McComb, which she never gave up. She finally fully retired in 1994 at the age of 72. When her health began to fail, she was served by faithful sitters, Marjorie Duncan and Norma Jackson, who were her companions to this day. They cared for her needs and loved her as a member of their families. We cannot thank the staff of Camelia Estates enough for their excellent care, above and beyond the call of duty. Never did we ask for anything, that the staff was not willing to go the extra mile to provide for her. She was a member of their family for nine, almost 10 years, and we know the feeling of loss must extend to some of you, as well. Thank you so much for a job well done. Finally, many thanks to Hospice Compassus and their caring staff for much of her care these past few weeks, as well as a brief time some years ago. Thanks to Brother Millican, Shannon Landen, MSW, Rebecca North Rayburn, RN and Teresa Williams, CNA for their professional and most compassionate care. Nancy was always one to do things herself; she was ahead of her time in believing that there was nothing a woman couldn't do if she set her mind to it. And the only thing she regretted was not becoming a doctor. She loved her vocation though, and loved and cared for her patients like they were family. She had the true calling of a healer and could make you feel better with just a touch. She frequently advocated for her patient when she felt like the doctor did not have all the information he needed; and doctors respected her opinion and her spunk. Nancy, as her friends and family called her, was always the life of the party. She and Roy travelled abroad with the success of Super Furniture Mart and she brought back many souvenirs of their trips. And yet, she was ready to meet her Savior whenever God called her home, and anxiously looked forward to being reunited with "My Roy". She loved travelling, she loved cooking out with friends, she loved to make jokes and she loved to laugh. If she loved you, she loved you fiercely, and she prayed for you. When her siblings' children were young, there were frequent gatherings, where there was lots of food, laughter and love. And isn't that what life, well-lived, is made of? Visitation is Saturday at Sharkey Funeral Home, 1023 Old Brookhaven Road in Summit from 10AM until services at 12PM with Dr. David Millican and Rev. Rick Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in Hollywood cemetery. Pallbearers are her nephews and great nephews, Jimmy Herrington, Philip Alford, Mike Ellard, Lane Ball, Andrew Ellard, and Bradley Thornhill.
