Mrs. Myrtle L. Thornton, 96, walked into the arms of the Savior on September 29, 2021, at her daughter's residence in Summit, MS.

Mrs. Myrtle was born in Smithdale, MS to James Harvey Durham, Sr. and Rena Nettles Durham. She loved to garden and could grow anything. She also loved to can her vegetables, and always had enough for everyone. She loved to take pictures and crochet. Her family says that she will be remembered for loving to read her Bible and was a lifelong member of Temple Hill Church of Christ.  She will be missed by all that knew and loved her.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Dennis Thornton; one brother, James Harvey Durham, Jr.; one sister, Mary L. Reeves and one great-grandchild, William Ryan Vowell.

She is survived by four sons, Charles Dennis Thornton (Frances) of Summit, MS, James E. Thornton (Danette) of Summit, MS, Delton Warren Thornton of McComb, MS and Elton Keith Thornton (Wendy) of Metairie, LA;  one daughter, Rene Faye Vowell ( the late Donald) of Summit, MS;  eight grandchildren, Charlotte Creel (Richard), Charles Thornton, Jr., Brian Thornton, Kathy Casey (David), Tonya Hooks (Clay), Steven Vowell (Rebecca), Kerry Thornton (Kim) and Kenric Thornton (Desiree); twenty-two great grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Pallbearers will be Kel Hooks, Josh Thornton, Kenric Thornton, Chuck Thornton, Kerry Thornton, and Cory Thornton. Honorary Pallbearers will be Steven Vowell and Brian Thornton.

A visitation will be held at Sharkey Funeral Home on October 4, 2021 from 9:00AM till time of service at 11:00AM. Bro. Lindeal Greer will officiate. Burial will be at Temple Hill Church of Christ in Smithdale, MS.
