Joel Rodney Barr, Sr., 84, of the Barto community in Pike County, passed away, Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center. He was born July 24, 1932 in Pike County. He was the son of Vincie Wilson and Wilma Walker Barr. Mr. Barr was a faithful caregiver of his wife of 45 years, Verena, for many years until her passing in 2000. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in McComb. Mr. Barr served the people of Pike County for 37 years, serving as Pike County Tax Assessor and Collector and Pike County Chancery Clerk having retired in 2000. He was a member of the McComb City Lodge # 382 F&AM; a 50 year member of Wahabi Shriner Temple and was a member of the McComb American Legion Lodge # 0511. Mr. Barr's favorite pastime activities included hunting, fishing, farming and most of all, spending valuable time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 2000, the Enterprise-Journal honored Mr. Barr with the Lifetime Achievement award. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Verena Higginbotham Barr and two brothers, V.W. Barr, Jr. and Richard W. Barr. He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Joel Rodney "Joey" Barr, Jr. and Robbin of the Barto community and Kevin and Victoria Barr of Summit; his daughter, Phyllis Barr of Ridgeland; two sisters, Wilma Faye Pounds of Progress and Barbara Ann Keenze and husband, Tom of Claremore, OK; four grandchildren, Dusty Barr, Brooke Barr Ward and husband, Mark; Nicky Barr and wife, Joanna and Hannah Barr; four great-grandchildren, Greta Barr, Wyatt Ward, Kaylin Barr and Addison Ward and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would also like to extend a special thank you and appreciation to Mr. Barr's caregivers, Brenda, Emma, Patricia, Mary Ann and Alfreda. Visitation is Sunday at Sharkey Funeral Home, 1023 Old Brookhaven Road, Summit, MS 39666 from 3PM until 6PM and Monday from 9AM until services at 10AM with Dr. Barry Ward and Hollis McGehee officiating.
