James Hewitt Smith Obituary
"For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands." –II Corinthians 5:1
James Hewitt Smith passed away on February 25, 2022 in Zachary, Louisiana.
He was born on October 5, 1933 in McComb, Mississippi to Perry and Ruth Smith.
James was a man of many talents. Growing up a country boy, he dearly loved being outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. One of his pride and joys was the bountiful vegetable garden he cultivated for many years, always generous with the fruits of his labors.
A skilled woodworker and craftsman, he created many works of art, including painting, woodcarving, furniture building and restoration, and much, more.
He was a man of duty, serving in the United States Marine Corp. during the Korean War.
James was also quite the country cook and could easily whip up delicious apple pies and tarts from scratch.
He loved to travel, and enjoyed many road trips around the country with his wife Patsy by his side.
James loved a funny story and was quick to spin one, always appreciating a good joke and a laugh. His kind and easy-going nature always made folks around him feel right at home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Perry and Ruth Smith; his brothers, Maylon Smith, Jimmy Smith, and Tom Smith; his sisters, Irene O'Neal, and Bonita Harris; and his daughter Susan Arleen Smith.
James is survived by his wife Patsy Smith; sisters Barbara Hux, and Bonnie Beardon; son Larry Smith (Liz); and grandson James T. Smith.
