Mr. James E. Thornton (aka “JT”), of Summit MS., passed away at Southwest Regional Medical Center, July 26, 2026, with his loving family by his side. James was born in Summit, MS on October 18, 1949, to James D. Thornton and Myrtle L. Durham.

A visitation will be held at Sharkey Funeral Home Friday, July 31, 2026, beginning at 8:00 a.m. until time of service at 9:00 a.m. A graveside service will immediately follow at Temple Hill Church of Christ Cemetery with Sharkey Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

After dedicating 26 years to the oil field industry, both on land and offshore, he built a career defined by hard work, determination, and an unwavering commitment to providing for those he loved. The long days, challenging conditions, and countless miles traveled, never diminished his strong work ethic or his appreciation for the people he met along the way.

When he wasn't working, he could almost always be found outdoors, where he was happiest. Whether hunting in the woods, fishing on a quiet morning, cutting grass, building and tending a good fire, or firing up the grill to cook for family and friends, he embraced every opportunity to enjoy nature and the simple pleasures of life. He found peace outdoors and joy in sharing those moments with others.

He also enjoyed the camaraderie of a good pool game and, in his younger years, was an avid golfer who cherished time spent on the course. No matter what the activity, it was never really about the game it was about the people, the laughter, and the memories made along the way.

Known for his warm personality and welcoming spirit, he truly never met a stranger. He had a remarkable ability to strike up a conversation with anyone and make them feel like an old friend. Whether sharing a funny story, telling a well-timed joke, or simply lending a listening ear, he had a gift for bringing people together and brightening their day.

Above all else, his greatest love was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who cherished every moment spent with those he held dear. His family was the center of his world, and he took immense pride in the lives and accomplishments of the people he loved.

His legacy is one of hard work, laughter, kindness, and love—a life defined not only by what he did, but by the countless lives he touched. He will be remembered for his strong spirit, his love of the outdoors, his endless stories and jokes, and most importantly, the deep and abiding love he shared with his family and friends. His memory will live on through every fishing trip, every backyard fire, every family gathering, and every story that brings a smile to those who knew him.

James is preceded in death by his parents; James D. Thornton and Myrtle L. Durham Thornton.

He is survived by his wife, the love of his life of 30 years, Danette K. Thornton; sons, Kerry James Thornton (Kim) of Marrero, LA, Kenric Paul Thornton (Desiree’) of Gretna, LA; stepdaughter, Stephanie A. Tauzin (Paul) of Belle Chasse, LA; grandchildren, Brandon Thornton (Ellen), Barak Thornton, Bryce Thornton, Blair Thornton, Terrell Thornton (Sasha), Tyler Tauzin, Samantha Tauzin; great-grandchildren, Amelia Lily Thornton, Rory Violet Thornton, Demi Lila Stansbury.
