Dorothy Kathleen
Murphy
May 9, 1931 – June 8, 2022
Mrs. Dorothy Kathleen Williams Murphy, 91, passed from this life on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at Aston Court Retirement Community with her loving family by her side. She was born on May 9, 1931 in McComb, MS, to David Jerome Williams and Mary Lou Lisenbea Williams.
Mrs. Dorothy was known as a hard worker for all of her life. She began her career at age 14, after fibbing about her age, being that Woolsworth would not hire anyone until they were 16. She went on to finish high school at Fernwood and continued her education earning a BS Degree at University of Southern Mississippi. She was offered a job with RCA (G.E.) even before graduating college. She met the love of her life Floyd L. Murphy, a U.S. Marine on a blind date. He was wounded in the Korean War and was brought home in 1952. They were wed in December of 1954. They led an interesting life with Floyd working as an electrical engineer at the Space Center in Cape Canaveral. They also spent five years on Andros Island in the Bahamas, when Floyd was sent there for work. They had many adventures together with her favorite one to tell being when Floyd built a camper over the bed of their El Camino. They proceeded on their journey from Florida to Alaska, camping along the way… and back. She would often say Floyd was the smartest and kindest man she knew. She will have a special jewel in her crown for the caregiver that she was to multiple family members. She started with Floyd, taking care of him at home with Alzheimer's until she couldn't do it alone. Being a talented seamstress, she took a job at Walmart in the fabric department to support his nursing care. Floyd passed away in 1996. She continued to care for her stepmother, her father, who lived to be 104, and also her brother Harold. She provided loving care with a smile and no complaints.
She loved Central Baptist Church, where she was a lifelong member. She also loved her puppy, Nikki. She was an avid reader, reading multiple books per week. Her wardrobe consisted of only items she ordered from L.L. Bean. She had a very generous heart, and would give to almost any charitable cause but most definitely those that were involved in military service.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Nora "Smiley" Brown Williams; and two brothers, D J Williams, Jr. and Harold Williams;
She is survived by special family members, Debbie Stovall and her husband Clem; their son, Kit Stovall and his wife Ashley; one sister-in-law, Marcell Murphy Byrd of Huntsville, AL; and one brother-in-law, Russell "Mickey" Murphy and his wife Michelle of Palm Bay, Florida; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of family and friends.
Pallbearers are Clem Stovall, Kit Stovall, and Alvin Dunaway.
Honorary pallbearers are; Howard Carlisle, Gary Felder, David Busby, and Melvin Montgomery.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June 10, 2022 at Sharkey Funeral Home in Summit, MS beginning at 1:00 PM until time of service at 2:00 PM. A graveside service will immediately follow at Pike Memorial Garden with Dr. David Millican officiating. Sharkey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
