Mrs. Artress Holmes, 88, passed from this life on Sunday, May 15, 2022, at Our
Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge, LA. She was born on February 9, 1934 in
McComb, MS, to George McDaniel and Bertie Travis McDaniel.
Mrs. Artress enjoyed serving others. She was always adamant that she had to do
her part and beyond if necessary to help anyone in need. She was strong in her
faith, fulfilling many roles at Fellowship Baptist Church where she was a charter
member. She will be remembered for her leadership as the Sunday School
opening assembly speaker. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved
her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, James E. Thornton, her
second husband, Bennie Holmes; two sisters, Vera McDaniel Smith and Eva Nell
McDaniel Miller; three brothers, Thomas Alton McDaniel, Richard "Dick"
McDaniel, and Jimmie Doyle McDaniel; two sons, James Glenn Thornton and
Jeffery Lamar Thornton.
She is survived by two sons, Greg Thornton and wife Kay, and Gerald Thornton; six
grandchildren, four great grandchildren; a special daughter Bonnie; and a host of
family and friends.
A visitation will be held Thursday, May 19, 2022, at Fellowship Baptist Church
beginning at 10:00 AM until time of service at 12:00 PM. A graveside service will
immediately follow at Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Preston
Thompson and Rev. Tom Burris will officiate with Sharkey Funeral Home in charge
of arrangements.
