Eli McElveen

Eli McElveen, 77, of Gillsburg, passed away August 5, 2018, at his home.

Visitation is 5PM until 8PM Tuesday at Sharkey Funeral Home, 1023 Old Brookhaven Road in Summit and continues Wednesday at 10AM until services at 12PM at Unity Baptist Church in Magnolia. Rev. Mike Morris will officiate. Burial will be in McClendon cemetery.

Mr. McElveen was born July 3, 1941, in Amite County, the son of Eli and Annie McElveen. Eli was a graduate of Magnolia High School and a member of the Naval Reserves.

He began his career as an offshore oil worker and later went to work with the Illinois Central Railroad. After many years, Eli became a self-employed carpenter often working alongside his brother, Elmo Honea.

Eli was a charter member of Unity Baptist Church. Eli and Glenda have made Unity their church home and have been active members there.

Eli was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather who will be greatly missed by his family. He adored his wife and took great pride in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. Eli loved watching his grandchildren play sports. He always had a smile and was blessed to have made many lifelong friends who will miss him greatly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Pat, brothers Frank (Buddy) and Elmo Honea, sisters Geraldine Smylie and Edna Purl.

Survivors include his wife, Glenda McClendon McElveen; two sons, Rick McElveen and wife Ginger of Summit, Marc McElveen and wife Renee of Olive Branch; one step-son, Jeff Hughes and wife Heidi of Magnolia; one step-daughter, Sheri Hughes of Jacksonville, FL; grandsons, Matt, Will, Spencer, and Harrison McElveen and granddaughters Kristen and Elizabeth McElveen, Savannah (Zac) Dias, and Allie Hughes; one brother-in-law, D. L. Purl; one sister-in-law, Guylene Cutrer.

Pallbearers will be Matt McElveen, Will McElveen, Spencer McElveen, Wren Honea, Ford Lambert, and Wayne Purl. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Hughes and Harrison McElveen.

Memorials may be made to Unity Baptist Church, 1076 Hamp Lea Road, Magnolia, MS 39652.
